SEXUAL IMMORALITY AND THE FUTURE OF THE NIGERIAN CHILD - II

Good day happy people. Thanks for joining me on another edition of Midweek Drive. Today, we look into the conclusive part of this critical subject which was started last week. First, we discuss the sequella associated with sexual immorality, then the possible solutions or preventive measures to be put in place.

Upshot of Sexual Immorality

The problems sexual immorality beget have been well pronounced in times past. Rape, sexual coercion, sexual abuse, unwanted/premature pregnancy, as well as disjointed future are just few of the various atrocities associated with sexual immorality.

In most rape cases where minors (children) are involved, the victims don provocative outfits which in turn send the wrong signal and attract the cruel and heartless offenders. Not just that, older children who get driven by this repugnancy learnt from any TV programmes, music videos, peers and other detestable sources, try to act it out on younger children or with their fellow mates. This thus result in various offences like sexual abuse, molestation from either sex etc, and if unlucky, pregnancy or sexual diseases. Sexual disease or pregnancy at an unripe age are the pinnacle of this obscenity. Parents who failed to curb their ward(s) excesses may bear the larger brunt but the lasting damage on the victim's life remain inestimable. The future of the ward(s) becomes dent, stained and may be blurred (no longer bright). Psychological and emotional effects too can't be quantified as this leaves the child with a patchy adolescence as well as a gruesome formative stage.

Panacea for Sexual Immorality

1. Parents: As said last week, the deeds begin and end with the parents. However, the menace can be curbed if parents decide to live up to their responsibilities. Parents should try make themselves readily available to the needs of their wards. The most important stage of child's development is the adolescence/Teen age. Any comma or form of mismanagement may have an everlasting and irreversible effect on the child's life. Parents must ensure that respective TV ratings attached to various programmes on local and terrestrial stations are followed to the core. Excuse your children when programmes not fit for their age is aired. Parental guidance security should be activated in case of unavailability of adult to monitor the children. Provocative clothes that drives sexual urge which might warrant abuse from opposite sex must not be worn by the wards. Peers and friends are big influence on your child's life. Therefore, parents should help their ward(s) when it comes to choosing friends and must remain keen observant with the kind of friends they move with both at home or school. Children's activities on social network should be monitored keenly or at best, reduced to barest minimum till they come of age. I remember my mum did that with my younger siblings down to the last born of the family. Any shortcomings observed in a child's life must be promptly corrected. Parents shouldn't hesistate to reprimand and scold their ward(s). Severe punishment should be meted when necessary. Spare the rod and spoil the child.

Also, parents should live a life worth emulating. Children at times mirror their parents' character. Train up a child in the right way to grow, such that the child won't derail as he grow older.

2. Media and Brocasting Corporation: The various broadcast media outlets seem to be the major platform that promote this indecent acts. So also should they lead the gospel towards redeeming the lost moral values amongst the present day youths and children. As the Yoruba saying goes, "It's the same hand that commits atrocity that corrects the deficiency". Media stations should limit the transmission of programmes with provocative and obscene shot. The Nigerian Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) should ban videos not suitable for societal consumption before it is released and not the usual practice of banning videos weeks after the general populace are tired of feasting on it. Regulations should be made on the kind of video that fits the society. Necessary fine should be placed on body or individual that defaults the regulations. Nigerian Films and Videos Censor Board (NFVCB) should screen movies and soaps before they are premiered and aired. Public awareness must be made on the effects of videos that depict mostly sexual advances on the continual decadence of the morality of the Nigerian society. Appropriate check and balance should be put in place to ensure these rules are followed to the letter.

With the silver bullets listed above, Nigeria should be cured of this insanity and restored back to her sane self; a society void of sexual violence and immoral activities.
