The session kick-started with a motion for vote of confidence on the Senate President moved by Senator David Umaru from Niger East. The vote of confidence was passed and supported by 84 senators.

Meanwhile, in his own speech, Saraki reiterates his commitment to work and dedicate himself to the service of the nation and not compromise the belief Nigerians have in them as representatives. He said "Not putting Nigeria first will amount to a betrayal of the confidence reposed on us by our constituencies and the country as a whole."

Saraki also talked about the stampede which claimed lives in Mecca during the Hajj including some Nigerian pilgrims. He stressed the need to investigate the issue proper and not leave it to Saudi government alone. "The Senate shall seek to determine the exact number of Nigerian lives lost in the Mecca incidents through the Federal Government agencies." he said.

Also, the nation's budget was discussed as he stated their plans to work on the 2015 budget review. "In this regard, the Senate will immediately begin a review of the 2015 budget in order to begin to lay down frameworks for the 2016 budget."

Saraki also stated that the Senate will begin utilization of E-parliament as a way of increasing public participation. "As part of our agenda, we shall also be starting the journey to deliver the E-parliament blueprint in the Senate. E-Parliament in the Senate will be a precursor to building a strong technology focus that will bring about greater public participation.
