Academics - University of Ibadan Holds Founder's Day and 2104 Convocation Ceremonies!


The University of Ibadan also known as the Nigeria's Premier University held its 66th Founder's day celebration and the 2014 convocation ceremonies. The event which took place at the International Conference Center, University of Ibadan started around 10am on Monday 17th November, 2014.

The event had in attendance notable scholars, top government officials, graduands and visitors. The minister of education, Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau represented the Presiden, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan. Nobel Laureate, Professor Woke Soyinka was also in attendance. Also in attendance, the deputy Governor of Oyo state. Otunba Laoye Tomori, Deputy Governor of Osun state represented the Governor, First Nigerian Professor of Medicine, Emeritus Professor Theophilus Oladapo Ogunlesi, and Royal Fathers.

The Pro Chancellor in his opening address said "the university is the largest producer of postgraduates in Nigeria". This year's celebration marks the was the first one since the chancellor assumed leadership of the school's council. He assumed leadership after the demise of the Emir of Kano, Late Alhaji Ado Bayero, CFR. who was the Chancellor until his death in June, 2014. The founder's day celebration didn't hold last year due to strike action embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).





The Vice Chancellor in his address announced that the university 5959 Masters degree from twelve out of thirteen faculties and seven out of eight institutes of the great institution were awarded in this year's convocation. He also said University of Ibadan is truly the University to other Universities. Certificate of graduands would be given out immediately after the event. Hon. Degrees was conferred on five distinguished Nigerians. They are as follows:

1. Chief Oluwole Oladapo Olanipekun, SAN, OFR: Former President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) and immediate past Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the University of Ibadan Governing Council 2009 – 2013 (LL.D).
2. Emeritus Professor Theophilus Oladapo Ogunlesi, OFR, FAS, FRCP, FMCPN, DFMCN, FWACP: First Nigerian Professor of Medicine, First Nigerian Head of the Department of Medicine and the First Nigerian to obtain the Membership and later Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians of London (D.Sc.).
3. Emeritus Professor Tekena Nitonye Tamuno: First alumnus of the University of Ibadan to become its Vice-Chancellor(D.Litt.).
4. Otunba Mike Adeniyi Isola Adenuga, Jr. GCON: An outstanding industrialist who sits atop Africa’s largest business empire comprising oil and gas, telecommunications, aviation, banking and real estate; building his companies in each of these sectors into major players (D.Sc.).
5. Professor Akinwande Oluwole Soyinka: An essayist, poet, novelist, first African Nobel Prize Winner for Literature in 1986 and wonderful alumnus of the University (D.Litt.).
During the citation of Dr. Mike Adenuga for the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Science (D.Sc.), the University Orator mentioned some of the life experiences of the Glo Telecoms bozz. He was said to have worked as a taxi driver and as a mortuary attendant amongst others. This is really a sign that success is really a great thing to achieve.
