The Federal Republic of Nigeria is referred to as the “Giant of Africa” due to its large population. The country is made of over 174million inhabitants. Statistically, ethnic composition of the country as at 2013 [1] states that:

The unification of the southern and Northern Nigeria happened in 1914 while the country
was declared and recognized in 1914 while the country was declared and recognized on 1st October, 1960. It became a republic on 1st October, 1963.

THE MILITARY ERA
The first military coup, which marked the beginning of the military era took place in January, 1966. This had adverse effects on the socio-economic and political conditions of the nation. The coup would not have been possible but due to the fact that after independence. Nigerian politicians and administrators themselves did not have the political experience and skill to manage the affairs of the nation with the system borrowed from the British.

The Nigerian Army were given the grounds to overthrow the government on 15th January, 1966 as a result of politically inspired rioting, looting and murder across the country [2]. These among others doomed the First Nigerian Republic. After the successful military coup, Major-General Ironsi became the leader of the Federal Military Government and appointed military governors for the four regions of the nation… (to be continued)
