Operatives of the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) Unit of the Ogun State Police Command have arrested a 30-year-old suspected cult member and recovered a locally made pistol along with a live cartridge following an early-morning operation in Abeokuta.

The suspect, identified as Idris Obarayi, was apprehended at his hideout in the Ita Ogboni, Igbehin area of Abeokuta around 5:45 p.m. on Tuesday, October 20, 2026.

The arrest followed a distress call received by police at approximately 2:30 a.m. regarding gunfire and screams in the Oke Ago-Owu neighborhood. Upon arrival, police operatives pursued several fleeing suspects, recovering the firearm and ammunition at the scene. Continuous tracking by SWAT officers led to Obarayi’s capture later that day.

According to preliminary police reports, the suspect confessed to being a member of the Aiye secret cult confraternity and claimed ownership of the seized weapon and ammunition.

Ogun State Commissioner of Police, CP Bode Ojajuni, commended the SWAT team for their prompt response and tactical execution. He reassured residents of the command's commitment to proactive policing and confirmed that a manhunt remains active to track down and arrest the remaining fleeing suspects.

The police command has urged members of the public to remain vigilant, carry on with their lawful activities, and promptly report any suspicious movements or criminal actions to local authorities.
